Hummingbirds do NOT use nest boxes or bird houses!

It is that time of the year again where we are frequently asked for hummingbird houses. Especially those cute little wooden houses shown online with hummingbirds fluttering nearby.
***Please be aware that those are strictly decorative. Hummingbirds do not nest in cavities and do not use houses or nest boxes.***
The grass roosting pockets (Top, middle picture), may be used by small songbirds for shelter, but not hummingbirds.
Follow this link by ---> Cornell Lab of Ornithology for confirmed scientific information on why Hummingbirds do not use nest boxes. Here is a little preview: "Hummingbirds are not cavity nesters; they build their tiny nests on trees, shrubs, and occasionally buildings. They choose a spot that supports the nest from below while offering some concealment. Common nest materials include spider silk (for stretchiness) and lichens on the outside (to help camouflage the nest)."
If you have any questions about nesting, please speak to one of our Sales Associates, who will recommend the correct nesting boxes for the birds in your habitat.
