Give eggshells to your birds for added calcium during nesting season. But, do this first...

Nesting season is upon us and mother birds will need to eat foods rich in calcium because it is vital to forming strong eggshells and baby bones. You can help mother birds by providing them with calcium enriched bird foods and even chicken eggshells from your kitchen!

To get started rinse the eggshells with warm water and then either bake them in the oven - the National Audubon Society recommends 250 degrees for 10 minutes - or you can boil them for 10-15 minutes. Baking or boiling the eggshells before putting them out for the birds is a crucial step because it kills bacteria such as salmonella.

Once the eggshells have been sterilized, you can crush them up and add them to your seed or seed blend, or even toss them on the ground.

Many of you are already helping mother birds and their young by feeding Wild Birds Unlimited calcium enriched bird foods. These include several of our seed blends: Nesting SuperBlend, Bluebird Bugberry Blend, No Mess Plus, and Tree Nutty Plus; all of our Bark Butter products and all of our SuperSuet products!
