Providing Nesting Materials Safely

Birds’ nests are true works of art — carefully woven from natural fibers, grasses, and plant materials, and sculpted into the perfect cradle for the next generation. Occasionally, nests may also contain human-made items like cotton threads or even pet fur.

While it may seem helpful to offer easy-to-gather nesting materials, new evidence from wildlife rehabilitators suggests caution is necessary. Some materials — even natural-seeming ones like fur or hair — can tangle around adult birds and nestlings, causing injury or entrapment.

In response to this research, experts have updated their recommendations to help keep nesting birds safe.

✅ Safe Nesting Materials to Provide

Offer any combination of these natural materials:

  • Dead twigs & dry leaves
  • Chemical-free dry grass
  • Feathers
  • Plant fluff or down (cattail fluff, cottonwood down)
  • Moss
  • Bark strips
  • Pine needles

❌ Materials to Avoid

Do not provide the following:

  • Plastic strips
  • Tinsel or cellophane
  • Aluminum foil
  • Dryer lint
  • Animal fur that has been cleaned with a shampoo or human hair (especially human hair)
  • Yarn longer than 1" 
  • Fabric, felt, or cloth scraps as these materials can become wet and moldy

These items can wrap around legs, wings, or necks — posing serious risks to both adults and nestlings.
